How to pair ambient music with breathwork: box breathing and 4-7-8

Breathing exercises are easier to stay with when there is something steady to rest your attention on. Slow ambient music, without a strong beat, gives that support without setting a pace for you.

This guide shows how to choose music for breathwork and walks through box breathing and 4-7-8 breathing with my playlists and the breathing pacer on this site.

Choosing music for breathwork

Pick music without a fixed tempo or drums, so your breath sets the pace rather than the song. Long drones and slow textures work best. Keep the volume low enough to hear your own breathing.

Holding Space

Soft, steady textures for daily practice.

Soft Return

Warm pieces for evening breathwork.

Box breathing (4-4-4-4)

Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat for about four minutes. Box breathing is a simple way to steady yourself during a busy day.

On the breathing exercises page, set the pacer to 4-4-4 and let the music run underneath.

4-7-8 breathing for winding down

Breathe in through the nose for 4, hold for 7, breathe out slowly through the mouth for 8. Start with four rounds; if the hold feels uncomfortable, shorten all counts in proportion.

This pattern suits the evening — pair it with warm, slow music and dim lights.

Safety

Stop and breathe normally if you feel dizzy or light-headed. If you have a heart or lung condition or are pregnant, check with a health professional before long breath holds.

Frequently asked questions

What music is best for breathwork?
Slow ambient music without drums or a fixed tempo, played quietly, so your own breath sets the pace.
How long should I do box breathing?
Around four minutes is a good start. You can extend it as it becomes comfortable.
Is 4-7-8 breathing good for sleep?
Many people use 4-7-8 breathing to wind down before bed. It is a relaxation technique, not a sleep treatment.
